Combining [ Video + GPS ] to Create Next Generation [ Online Maps ]
It was a action packed weekend at Xterra Marquette! There were boats, drones, paddle boards and all manner of filming and mapping devices strapped to any number of Trail Genius racers and crew members. The morning started off warm, which is never a good sign race day, but the water in Tourist Park Basin just outside of downtown Marquette, MI was cold so wetsuits were good to go. There were two swim lengths, the Epic (1 mile) and Sport (250 yards) which we filmed using a combination of kayak, paddle board, and the TG chopper. The Epic swim had a nice twist, where racers when they finished their first lap had to exit the water, run through a gate on the beach and then head back into the water for another lap (aerial video of the beach run). Jay got some sweet shots with the TG chopper, like this one where he follows Chris as he exits the water and heads into transition 1.
Both Epic and Sport bike and running courses used the beautiful Marquette North Trails, which have a mix of technical and fast sections. The rain from the day before packed the sandy sections in, and made for nice conditions. The map of Chris' race is live, with complete video synced with GPS of the swim, bike and run courses.
Over all we had 3 Trail Genius racers filming and competing. Dave took first in his age group in the Sport distance and Chris took second in his age group in the Epic distance, so it was a good day of racing for the team. Everyone stayed safe but Chris did test out the age old question, "If a runner falls in the woods, is anyone watching?" Well if you race for Trail Genius, you can bet there is, and we have the video of his fall to prove it.
We have to give a big shout out the the race organizers, they put on an excellent event, and took great care of our whole crew. With such a beautiful location and one of a kind course, this event is a must do for all that are into the Xterra style races.
